Superheroes are awesome! We love superheroes—from Ant-Man to Zatara—and all the heroes in between.
Actually, superheroes have existed for as long as stories have existed—before writing and across every culture we find evidence of superheroes. For example, Fionn mac Cumhaill built the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland, and Gilgamesh defeated Humbaba in Mesopotamia. Rama was exiled from Ayodhya in India, while Beowulf slew Grendel and Grendel’s mother in Scandinavia.
And that’s before the ancient Greeks—who boasted a plethora of heroes to match any collection from Marvel or DC!
What puts the Super and Hero in Superhero?
The rules about what makes a superhero are pretty flexible. But at the core, most all superheroes are driven by a purpose—and that purpose empowers them to gain control over—or respond to—events (usually caused by bad people) that take place in their life—for their own benefit for the benefit of others. They use their powers to impose order on a chaotic world.
Some are born that way
For example, Wonder Woman—her mission is to bring peace and love back into humanity’s heart. She defends humanity with her Amazon training—which has given her superior strength, speed, and agility. She can fly, and is trained in hand-to-hand combat. She also had the ability to talk to animals. In addition to her natural superpowers, she has some great gear, too!
Some are not
By contrast, there’s Batman: he’s an ordinary mortal who made himself a superhero through discipline and determination and commitment. He has no real “super powers,” he’s a human being bent on a mission.
Which proves our point.
This point is vital to understand
Superheroes have a purpose that empowers them to control and respond to the events in their life—for their benefit and to benefit others.
How can you get superhero powers?
If there was a school curriculum built around teaching you to become a superhero, it would start with helping you to create and define your purpose or mission, and then teach you how to control the events in your life—in order to manifest that purpose. Without purpose and control, you’re weak. With purpose and control, you can be stronger than you ever imagined.

Why start with purpose?
Purpose pulls. It’s what compels you to do, to create, to explore, and discover.
The need for purpose is one the defining characteristics of human beings. Human beings crave purpose, and suffer serious psychological difficulties when we don’t have it. Purpose is a fundamental component of a fulfilling life.
When you have a sense of purpose, you never get up in the morning wondering what you’re going to do with yourself. When you’re “in purpose” –that is, engaged with and working towards your purpose—life becomes easier, less complicated and stressful.
You become more mono-focused, like an arrow flying towards its target, and your mind feels somehow taut and strong, with less space for negativity to seep in.
There is one quality which one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants, and a burning desire to possess it. –Napoleon Hill
Why define your purpose?
All of life is a series of choices and journeys. Defining and articulating your personal purpose or mission will help you decide which road you will take.
Make sure this statement of purpose addresses not just desires for material well-being and prosperity, but more importantly, your humanity—who you are and what you stand for as well as what you are willing to fight for or walk away from.
The important thing is that men should have a purpose in life. It should be something useful, something good. –Dalai Lama
How to find your purpose
We’ve made it simple—but don’t confuse that with easy. You’ll have some digging and expect some mental energy effort to identify what makes you tick.
But, if you make the effort, you’ll discover what lies at the center of your being and you’ll be prepared to turn what matters most to you into meaningful goals. Then you can put those deeply held values and goals to work in your daily life.

Next, comes controlling events
The secret to having the power to control events lies in understanding what “Time” is. Here’s why: Albert Einstein (a lesser-recognized superhero) said, “Time has not independent existence apart from the order of events by which we measure it.”
Hold on, there’s more where that came from…
Gottfried Leibniz, a mathematician and philosopher observed that, “Time is merely the order of events, not an entity itself.”
Pretty heady stuff, am I right?
In other words, time does not exist as a substance—you can’t fill a bucket with it. Time exists only as a collection of events that have happened, are happening, or will happen in the future.
Here’s what I’m getting at: Events are the basic element of time.
The power of this is: If you can manage your time, you can control what events occur in your life, and because you’ve discovered your purpose, you can know how to respond to events that occur outside your control!
The concept of event control can have superhero power in your life. You can see the future as an opportunity for self-fulfillment, an opportunity for grand experiences and service that you can plan for and make happen.
Your personal self-value has a direct bearing on your ability to accomplish your wishes in life. Your self-esteem is enhanced when you are in control of events and it suffers when you are not in control.
How is planning the key to event control?
Here’s why: because planning is predetermining future events. It’s bringing the future into the present so that you can do something about it now—and that’s a superhero power! Time management is actually the act of controlling events one after the other.
Understanding this real nature of events going on around you is essential to prioritizing them appropriately and bringing them under control.
